Affinity Gaming’s Lakeside Hotel and Casino in Osceola, Iowa is in the process of restaffing their security team in an effort to meet the demand of returning patrons as well as new and upcoming renovation projects kicked off by management in June. Their primary focus is on finding quality candidates to fill open security positions as they increase casino and event activities.
After more than 16 months of uncertainty, and pandemic restrictions, the team at Lakeside have redoubled their effort to build back to pre-2020 numbers and more. Sondra Romeo, Director of Human Resources for Lakeside Hotel and Casino, discussed the security team needs as well as their idea of the perfect candidate.
“It all really comes down to commitment and quality of character,” said Romeo. “We’re looking for people that can see the opportunity and have the discipline to make the team stronger for all of our patrons.”
Aric Hewlett, Lakeside Hotel and Casino’s Security Supervisor, started with the team out of high school, working while taking classes at SWCC. While initially the position was a temporary solution to supplement college finances, he realized the work was more diverse and exciting than his chosen path, teaching. After spending a short time in the classroom, he returned to Lakeside, picking up the security position he’d started. Ten years later, he continues to be a leader for the Lakeside Hotel and Casino Security team.
“I even met my wife and got married because of this job,” said Hewlett. “After a decade with the company I still enjoy the diversity, whether it’s working the casino floor, a concert, or helping with shuttle services, it’s all exciting. And the support from the Lakeside management team is outstanding.”
Continuing education and training is an integral part of building the Lakeside security team, helping them stay current on security protocols as well as advancing in their professions. At the time of the interview, Aric had just returned from company-sponsored security and self-defense training held in Las Vegas.
“Employees like Aric are the ideal candidates for the Lakeside security team,” said Romeo. “The investment they put into Lakeside is directly reciprocated by the investment we put into them. That makes a stronger, more dedicated security presence throughout the facility.”
With more than half a dozen positions available on the security team, the opportunity for employment at the Casino is prime. Security positions are offered their wage plus a $2,000 sign-on bonus distributed over their first 12 months.
