As Clarke County Hospital reaches the end of its fiscal year, our organization likes to take a look back at the contributions we have made in the community we live and serve in. This past year has been really busy and we can’t say enough how exciting it’s been supporting other local organizations in Clarke County. Every year, education is on the fore front of our mission and vision in Clarke County. We find it essential to promote proactive wellness and health education to youth. Whether it’s providing nutritional educational, CPR training, career opportunities, or sports injury coverage, we feel that supporting the youth in Clarke County will only benefit the community and have a lasting impact for generations to come! We’d like to share some information about the types of programs and education opportunities we currently provide to youth and Clarke Community Schools.
CPR Training & Certifications – Coaches
Timely CPR classes for coaches in need to maintain CPR certification card for coaching licensure.
Stop the Bleed Training – Clarke Schools Teachers
Stop the Bleed training is part of a nationwide campaign initiated by a federal interagency work-group convened by the National Security Council Staff. Hands on education provided to attendees to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters.
CPR Training – High School Students
CCH staff teach the Clarke High School senior students CPR. Staff will teach groups the basics of CPR and AED usage. Ensuring students are trained in CPR before leaving high school will help prepare them for an emergency in the future.
Sports Medicine Coverage
Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. This has been provided at home football, wrestling and track meets and also during office hours for approximately 2-3 hours a week.
Career Days – Sophomore Students
Sophomore students tour hospital departments and learn about careers and education opportunities in healthcare.
Career Job Shadow Days – Junior Students
Junior students job shadow hospital departments of their choice for a day to fulfill their graduation requirement.
First Aid Education – Middle School Students
Introduction to first aid classes are taught to the middle school health classes at Clarke. Clarke Middle School has been interested in adding this to their curriculum for students that are babysitters or caretakers for young children. Students will learn basic first aid information and techniques.
Nutrition Education – Middle School Students
Teaching middle school students about portions sizes, making good food choices, reading food labels and learning how to identify sugar content in common foods. Students will learn through interactive games that use food models to show food composition to drive them towards making healthy decisions.
Healthy Living & Staying Active Education –
Middle School Students
CCH facilitates physical activities as part of the Live Healthy Iowa exercise and healthy living movement.
Emergency Preparedness Education – Open to all students
A wide-range of home schooled students (age K-12) receive age appropriate lesson plans on emergency situations. Students will grow more comfortable with EMS and learn steps to help deal with emergency situations.
Handwashing Education – Preschool and Head Start Programs
Students learn the importance of washing hands to prevent the spread of germs and illness. The children have an opportunity to see “germs” under a black light and after proper handwashing see how well they did by re-examine their hands in the black light post hand wash.
EMS Teddy Bear Clinic – Elementary Students Students will have the opportunity to bring in a stuffed animal of their choice and have a mock injury/illness of their choice assessed by a member of CCH Emergency Medical Services. Students have an opportunity to look inside an ambulance.
Clarke County Hospital also believes that giving back is a privilege in being a community partner. Here are some of the donation drives and monetary ways Clarke County Hospital supports our local youth.
Tissue and Hand Sanitizer Drive & Donations
Clarke County Hospital collects tissue and hand sanitizer donations to help stock up on supplies to prevent illness during flu season.
Mitten & Hat Drive Donations
Clarke County Hospital staff purchase mittens and hats for Clarke and Murray Elementary Schools. Donations are handed out by teachers and school staff when children are in need.
Bike Helmet Donations for Youth
Clarke County Hospital collects grants and donations to provide free bike helmets for youth in Clarke County. This program is to promote bike and helmet safety.
Auxiliary Scholarships (students pursuing careers in healthcare)
Every year, Clarke County Hospital Auxiliary awards (3) $1,000 scholarships to students in Clarke County who are pursuing a career in healthcare. $39,000 in scholarships have been donated to students in Clarke County over the past 12 years.
