The Osceola Water Board of Trustees would like to reach out and remind everyone that, although Osceola saw a fairly wet spring and early summer, West Lake water levels have been steadily decreasing.  Over the last few months, there has been little to no measurable rainfall, with no significant relief in sight.

Images of USDA/NOAA tracking, showing the spread of dry conditions across the state over the last few weeks.

This week the USDA/NOAA drought monitor classified conditions in Clarke County and most of Southern Iowa as “abnormally dry”.  Without significant rain which is missing from the most recent forecast, the dry conditions will continue to cause issues both with raw water availability and treatment.

“We’re monitoring the situation closely as West Lake levels continue to drop roughly 0.17 feet each week,” said Brandon Patterson, Osceola Water Works Superintendent. “It’s never too early to look at ways to save water before it becomes necessary.”

Here are some easy ways to cut back on water usage:

  • Water your lawn less often and broom off driveways, sidewalks and steps.
  • Identify and fix leaks; a small drip can waste 50 gallons of water a day.
  • Take shorter showers or baths.
  • Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving.
  • Run the laundry and dishwasher less frequently and for full loads.

Hopefully, some of the simple efforts listed above will make a difference.

“The Osceola Water Board of Trustees meets again on Thursday, November 7th and will discuss possible next steps regarding its conservation ordinance,” said Patterson.
